Pitta Bread

Easy to make and well worth the effort, you cannot beat the taste of fresh, homemade pitta bread.

Ingredients

250g bread flour
pinch of salt
140 ml of warm water
1 tablespoon oil
1/2 teaspoon dried yeast (3g)
Non stick baking tray
Rolling pin.
Extra flour for dusting.

Method

Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl.  Then add the oil and gradually pour in the warm water. Mix in a food mixer using the dough utensil for about 5 minutes or hand mix. If you are mixing by hand, knead the dough until it is elastic in consistency and quite sticky.

Place the dough in a oil coated bowl, cover with cling film or a tea towel. Leave in a warm place until the dough has doubled in size.

Put the oven on to about 220 degrees. Place your empty baking tray in the oven to heat up as the oven is reaching its hot temperature.

Divide the dough mixture into 8 balls. Dust your rolling out area. Roll each of the 8 balls into small tear shapes so they resemble a pitta bread.

When the oven has heated up, quickly take out your heated oven tray and place the pitta bread shapes on top.  Cook in the oven for 5 minutes.

They should start to puff up when cooking into the oven and be slightly browned when you take them out.

Leave to cool for a couple of minutes and then they are ready to eat. They are great with houmous and chopped up vegetable such as carrot and cucumber.
